Fall Foraging + Our Terrific Turkey Craft!

Fall Foraging + Our Terrific Turkey Craft!

Make our Terrific Turkey Craft here

Juuust when I thought all the leaves had turned to crunchy piles this fall, my 2YO and I went foraging around our neighborhood. Our mission: pinecones, sticks and acorns—essentially anything brown, not yet decomposing into the pavement. But to our delight, we found a handful of trees peaking in mid-November. Juxtaposed against a brown backdrop, we found bright red berries, maroon shrubs and yellow trees. Perfecto. We came home, with our arms full (mostly mine) of precious foraged loot.

We had a blast climbing hills of pine needles, weaving between bushes, picking up fallen gems. For every red leaf I picked, Tommy picked one. For every pinecone I scooped, he scooped one. We talked about the colors, ran our fingers over the husky textures and got sap in our hair. Our favorites were the feathery red maple bushes (a good height for toddlers), and the oversized acorns wearing pointy hats. It was a sunny, memorable day that I am so very grateful for.

As an added bonus, his big brother and Daddy showed up to help us. We found a baby praying mantis to boot! So fun.

Now for some feathery fun!

Make our Terrific Turkey!

While most people roast their turkeys, we forage them. :-) We love how the red leaves harkened to turkey feathers. And the stems of a maple leaf made yellow bird legs. Add googly eyes and Voila! A fabulous lil’ turkey made with the leaves falling on your sidewalk. Grab your kids and get outside to work of the tryptophan!
